Amid the ongoing military standoff with China in eastern Ladakh, Indian agencies are closely monitoring the development of a Chinese airport in Shake. Once fully prepared, this military base can strengthen China’s hand on the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

According to an India Today report, senior government sources said that Shakche airport is being rapidly developed as a military airport suitable for combat operations. These developments preceded the military standoff between the Indian Army and the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) last year.

China is aware that the Indian Air Force (IAF) is capable of moving into conflict zones at a much faster rate than the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF). It is believed that for this reason the PLA had to start the development of the airport in Shakche. The Chinese are reportedly building a new airport between Kashgar and Hogan to ease PLA Air Force combat operations.

According to sources, India has been monitoring seven PLA Air Force bases since May last year. China has upgraded many of these bases in recent years, including but not limited to building hardwood shelters, expanding runways and deploying additional forces.

India is keeping a close watch on three PLA Air Force bases – Kashgar, Hotan and Nagari Gunsa – in front of eastern Ladakh. Other Chinese airbases on the radar of Indian agencies include Shigatse, Lhasa Gongkar, Ningchi and Chamdo Pangta. “Satellites and other forms of surveillance are being used to monitor seven Chinese military bases located in the Xinjiang and Tibet Autonomous Military Regions,” top government sources said.
